The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has stated that while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu enjoys widespread backing to seek re-election in 2027, the decision regarding his running mate will only be taken after the party’s national convention, typically held a year before the polls.
Speaking on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” programme on Friday, Basiru clarified that conversations surrounding the vice-presidential slot are premature, stressing that no decision has been made to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima.
“As far as we are concerned, the national summit held in the Presidential Villa has endorsed Mr. President based on his track record,” Basiru said.
“A large spectrum of stakeholders in our party have overwhelmingly given their endorsement to Mr. President.
The question of running mate is not yet onboard, and nobody has come to say that the President has made any adverse decision regarding the present Vice President.”
North-East Drama and Shettima’s Omission
Basiru’s comments come just days after a controversial APC stakeholders meeting in Gombe State, where APC Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, endorsed Tinubu’s re-election without referencing Vice President Shettima, a former governor of Borno State.
The omission reportedly sparked outrage, with Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum leading protests demanding Shettima’s inclusion in any endorsement of Tinubu from the region.
Although party leaders have sought to downplay the rift, the incident has rekindled speculation over internal dynamics within the APC ahead of 2027.
