A tragic case of alleged police recklessness has sparked outrage in Lagos following a chilling video confession by Inspector Ayeni Adeolu, who admitted to fatally shooting a young errand boy while reportedly intoxicated.
The incident occurred in Ikeja, near the residence of Justice Ramon Oshodi, whom Inspector Adeolu is assigned to as a personal security detail. In the video, a visibly shaken Adeolu explained that the fatal shot was not intentional, claiming he had aimed at the sky to defuse a confrontation—but the bullet struck the young man in the chest instead.
“My name is Ayeni Adeolu and I am working for Justice Oshodi here in Lagos State, Ikeja,” the inspector begins. “I would like to explain why I killed him because he didn’t do anything for me to warrant it. As I was coming back from work, I was stopped and offered alcohol. I bought the sachet drink and consumed it. Then I asked him if he was intoxicated and he said yes, so I finished drinking.”
He went on to describe how tensions escalated:
“After some seconds, I saw him involved in an argument. I had told him before—if he had any issue with anyone, he should tell me. Then I saw someone chasing him. He ran to me. I tried to calm the other person down and then fired a shot to the air. I’m surprised the bullet hit him in the chest because I wasn’t aiming at him.”
A source close to the scene confirmed parts of the inspector’s account, saying that the officer had accepted a sachet of Chelsea dry gin from the boy shortly before the chaos unfolded. According to the source:
“Ayeni was offered a drink by the boy while passing a local spot selling hot drinks. Shortly after, some men came to confront the boy. Though Ayeni tried to calm them, they ignored him—likely because he was not in uniform. To scare them off, he fired his pistol, but the bullet tragically struck the boy in the chest. He died instantly.”
The video, which has now gone viral, includes distressing footage of the errand boy lying motionless in a pool of blood, while Inspector Adeolu holds his chest in what appears to be shock and grief.
The identity of the deceased has not been officially released, but sources describe him as a trusted aide who frequently ran errands for the officer and his household. The Inspector General of Police is yet to release a formal statement on the matter, but calls for accountability are mounting.
