Ile-Ife, Osun State | June 20, 2025

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has applauded the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) for its relentless efforts in tackling crimes within Nigeria’s forest regions.

In a statement released on Friday, the royal endorsement came during a courtesy visit by the NFSS Commandant General, Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, and his team to the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The monarch not only commended their performance but also revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is making plans to fully integrate the NFSS into Nigeria’s national security framework.

“A few days ago, less than two weeks back, I was with Mr. President, and he spoke graciously about your efforts. He has a massive plan for you and wants to integrate you properly into the structure of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Ooni disclosed.

Oba Ogunwusi urged the officers to uphold integrity and not compromise when eventually deployed in full operational command across the country’s forests. He assured the team of full support from monarchs and community leaders to ensure forest safety.

“The leadership of this country has given you recognition. Thanks to Mr. President and the entire National Assembly for everything they’ve done,” the monarch stated.
“We, as traditional rulers, are fully ready to work with you to secure our forest zones.”

NFSS: Over 18,000 Forest Guards in the South Alone

In response, Dr. Osatimehin reaffirmed the NFSS's commitment to eliminating insecurity in forest areas and emphasized ongoing collaboration with other security agencies to ensure national security goals are achieved.

“We currently have over 18,000 forest guards operating in the South alone. With proper integration and access to modern equipment, we will do much more to safeguard Nigeria’s forests,” the NFSS boss noted.

He also called on all NFSS personnel across the nation to strengthen cooperation with other law enforcement bodies in the shared mission to secure Nigeria’s vast forest territories.
