Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, promising to serve only a single four-year term if elected, in order to urgently stabilize and reform the country.
Speaking during a live session on X Spaces with supporters on Sunday night, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s future and dismissed speculations that he was planning a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
“If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue, Zamfara, reviving our economy, or putting food on the table for Nigerians, count me out,” Obi said, reaffirming his stance on meaningful alliances.
In a statement signed by his media spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, the Labour Party flagbearer stressed that coalition talks would only be meaningful if they were issue-based and focused on national development.
Peter Obi declared that his ambition to return to the presidential race is driven by the urgency to rescue Nigeria from economic collapse, insecurity, and poor governance.
“I will bring stability in Nigeria within two years in office. Leaders must stay in Nigeria to fix Nigeria,” he said.
He also emphasized his respect for the principle of power rotation, saying, “I believe in the rotation of government between North and South. I implemented it in Anambra as governor.”
Obi strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s governance style, particularly his foreign trips, including the recent visit to St. Lucia.
“In two years, President Tinubu has not spent a night in any Nigerian state outside Lagos, but he is staying eight nights in St. Lucia — a place smaller than Ajegunle,” Obi said.
“People are dying in Benue and Borno while our leaders are commissioning bus stops and vacationing.”
The former governor promised a different, non-violent strategy for the 2027 election, vowing to ensure transparency in the process and resist electoral manipulation.
“Our votes in 2027 will count, and we will ensure they count. Before Abuja results are announced, the process must be right.”
If elected, Obi pledged to focus on security, education, and poverty eradication in his first 100 days, while cutting the cost of governance and eliminating corruption.
“My family will not be involved in corruption. Funds will go to critical sectors. I will bring sanity to governance by focusing on priorities.”
Obi addressed the internal crisis in the Labour Party, revealing that efforts are underway to get INEC to recognize the Nenadi Usman-led faction, following a Supreme Court ruling.
He also vowed to uphold democratic values by strengthening opposition parties and ending party defections if elected.
“There will be no defection of elected officials to other parties under my watch. A real opposition must be preserved.”
In his closing remarks, Obi reiterated that leadership must be selfless and rooted in sacrifice.
“Anyone who wants to serve must be ready to lay down their life for Nigerians. I was physically present wherever there was an issue in Anambra. My record speaks for itself.”
As 2027 approaches, Obi’s clear declaration is expected to set the tone for what could be another pivotal presidential contest in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
