Tragedy has struck the Nimo community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, as unknown gunmen have brutally murdered a respected traditional chief, Ogbuefi Ozo Nnanyelugo, despite receiving a ₦15 million ransom from his family.
The late Chief, a senior member of the Nimo Royal Cabinet, was reportedly abducted on his farm by masked assailants. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the farmland unexpectedly, causing workers to flee in fear, leaving the elderly statesman vulnerable. He was taken away at gunpoint.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed that the family had paid ₦15 million to secure his release. However, the victim’s lifeless body was later discovered in the same farmland, bearing deep machete wounds to the head.
“It’s barbaric and senseless,” the eyewitness said. “After collecting such a huge sum, they still killed him. This is a painful loss to the entire community.”
The gruesome murder has thrown the Nimo community into mourning, sparking widespread outrage and demands for justice. Security operatives have since cordoned off the area, and investigations are underway.
As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement.
Community leaders are calling on both state authorities and security agencies to act swiftly to arrest the killers and put an end to what they describe as an alarming wave of violent crimes across the region.
