A late-night altercation over a disputed N15,000 payment ended in tragedy on Sunday, June 29, 2025, after a sex worker reportedly collapsed and died during a confrontation at a brothel in the Cathedral area of Akure, Ondo State.
The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the ‘A’ Division Police Command, and has since led to the arrest of three suspects, while two others remain at large, police said.
Sources at the scene told Akuko - Latest Celebrity News that the male client had paid N15,000 for services, but became dissatisfied and demanded a refund after the sex worker reportedly complained of sudden weakness during intercourse.
“The man insisted he wasn’t satisfied and wanted his money back,” one eyewitness said.
“They argued, and it turned physical when the sex worker refused. The manager tried to intervene but couldn’t stop the situation.”
According to reports, the customer left the brothel angrily and returned with a group of suspected miscreants, allegedly his friends, to forcibly retrieve the money. The arrival of the reinforcements further escalated the situation, prompting the brothel management to call in the police.
“A patrol team was deployed to the scene, and the main suspect and two others were apprehended while attempting to collect the money by force,” the source said.
“Meanwhile, the woman’s condition was worsening.”
The sex worker, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rushed to a nearby hospital in the Lafe area, and subsequently referred to the Police Hospital in Akure, where a medical officer declared her dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ayanlade Olayinka, said three persons had been arrested, and efforts were ongoing to locate two others who escaped during the police operation.
“The timely intervention of police detectives led to the arrest of three suspects,” Olayinka said.
“We are actively pursuing the other two who fled the scene.”
He added that the names of the suspects are being withheld pending the outcome of investigations.
“The body of the deceased has been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue for an autopsy,” he noted.
According to Olayinka, the State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, has ordered that the case be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough and discreet investigation.
“Necessary steps are being taken to ensure justice is served,” Olayinka assured.
“We encourage members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police by providing any useful information.”
He concluded that once the investigation is concluded, the suspects will be formally charged to court.
