At least six persons have been confirmed dead following a deadly explosion caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted at the Eke Ubaheze market square in Awo-Idemili, located in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.
The explosion, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, sent shockwaves through the local community, sparking panic and fear in Ubaheze and neighbouring villages. Eyewitnesses said the tragic blast was triggered when a middle-aged woman, Ngozi Umeh, unknowingly stepped on the hidden device.
Sources from the village revealed that six individuals were killed instantly, with several others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
In an official reaction, the Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway. According to the police spokesperson, Mr. Henry Okoye, preliminary findings indicate that the explosion was caused by a landmine allegedly planted by suspected IPOB/ESN militants.
“The Imo State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation following an unfortunate incident that occurred on June 24, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m. at Eke Ubaheze Market Square. An IED detonated, resulting in the death of one person and injury to five others,” Okoye stated.
He noted that the woman later died from her injuries in the hospital, while the remaining victims are receiving medical treatment.
Responding swiftly to the emergency, the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, deployed operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, tactical teams, and officers from Orsu and Orlu Divisions to cordon off the area, conduct evacuations, and search for additional threats.
“The area has since been declared safe, and normal activities have resumed under enhanced security surveillance,” Okoye added.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has been tasked with leading a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The Police Commissioner extended condolences to the family of late Ngozi Umeh and expressed hope for the swift recovery of the injured victims.
“The Command remains resolute in its determination to root out all criminal elements threatening the peace of the state,” Okoye emphasized.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and security agencies assured the public that stringent measures are now in place to prevent any recurrence.
