Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82 in a London hospital, sparking a wave of emotional reactions across the country.

His former spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday afternoon.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus,” Shehu stated.

As the news spread, Nigerians flooded social media with a mix of shock, grief, and biting commentary—many linking Buhari’s death to the harsh economic and political climate under current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Even Buhari couldn’t survive Tinubu’s regime,” one user wrote, a statement that quickly trended on X (formerly Twitter), reflecting growing discontent with the current administration’s handling of national affairs.

Another post read, “Rest in peace General Buhari. You survived Abacha, survived Yar’adua, survived the PDP, but Tinubu’s Nigeria took you out.”

The ex-president, a retired general, ruled Nigeria first as a military head of state from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His 2015 election was historic, marking the first time an incumbent president was defeated at the polls.

Despite being widely criticized for his own handling of the economy during his tenure, Buhari had kept a low profile since leaving office last year. His death, however, has ignited a firestorm of political commentary, as citizens now openly question the direction of Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope" agenda.
