Two police officers attached to Mopol 18, Owerri, were shot dead on Sunday during a brazen gun attack in the Okigwe area of Imo State, sparking renewed concerns about growing insecurity in the region.
Sources said the officers were stationed near the old Gariki area when unknown gunmen opened fire on them during routine patrol duty. Two officers were killed instantly, while others sustained injuries but reportedly escaped.
Police Confirm Attack, Vow to Hunt Perpetrators
ASP Henry Okoye, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Imo State, confirmed the incident and described it as “very unfortunate.”
“The incident that happened in Okigwe is a very unfortunate one,” Okoye said in a statement on Sunday.
“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State, CP Aboki Danjuma, has strongly condemned the attack and gruesome murder of two of our personnel. These officers were deployed on routine patrol duty and met their end at the hands of criminal elements.”
Okoye said the Commissioner of Police, along with the Commander of Mopol 18 and other senior officials, had visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.
“We have deployed tactical teams and charged them to go all out, in synergy with the military, to hunt down the hoodlums responsible for this senseless act of violence,” he added.
Rising Security Concerns in Imo State
The incident adds to a series of targeted attacks on security personnel in the South-East, further raising alarm among residents and stakeholders over the volatile security situation in the area.
Local communities have since called for urgent intervention and proactive security strategies to prevent future attacks and bring perpetrators to justice.
