At least 10 Boko Haram insurgents met their end in a heated gun battle along the Rann–Gamboru Ngala axis near the Nigeria–Cameroon border, military authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, who briefed the press on the incident, said the terrorists were killed during a joint clearance mission by Nigerian troops and operatives of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
“The encounter occurred during a combined operation strategically designed and executed to flush out remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists operating within the border communities,” Kangye stated.
He explained that the troops, acting on credible intelligence, stormed the hideout of the insurgents and engaged them in a fierce gun duel.
“The operation took place between Rann and Gamboru. Our men overpowered them with superior firepower, leaving 10 of the terrorists neutralised,” he said.
The military also recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including anti-aircraft rounds, which are now undergoing technical analysis.
According to Kangye, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dominate the Lake Chad Basin and cut off cross-border movement by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters.
“We are determined to maintain full control over the southern Lake Chad axis,” he said.
“These operations will continue in full force until we dismantle every last stronghold of the terrorists.”
He also confirmed that follow-up operations are underway to track down fleeing insurgents and uncover more hideouts in the area.
