The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a formal security advisory urging American citizens to avoid all non-essential visits to Nigerian military and government installations, citing rising global security concerns.
In a statement released on Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja announced a temporary restriction on movement for all embassy personnel and their families, prohibiting them from visiting military sites and government venues in the capital unless for official reasons.
“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,” the embassy stated.
The mission further urged all American nationals in Nigeria to remain vigilant in public places, particularly at locations frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and Nigerian government officials.
In the advisory, the U.S. government encouraged citizens to adopt a cautious posture by avoiding large gatherings, maintaining unpredictable routines, and familiarising themselves with emergency exits in public buildings.
“Stay alert in public places… Avoid large gatherings and consider limiting unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarise yourself with emergency exits when you enter buildings. Review your personal security plans,” the statement added.
Despite the heightened alert, officials confirmed that the consular sections of both the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open for operations.
The advisory, which does not point to a specific threat, aligns with a broader trend of diplomatic missions across the globe taking precautionary measures amid heightened international security risks.
U.S. citizens in Nigeria are encouraged to register with the embassy and stay informed through official government communication channels for updates as the situation evolves.
