Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, has confirmed the collapse of a three-storey building along Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos Island, on Thursday.

“A three-storey building has collapsed on Lagos Island,” Omotoso said in a Facebook post.

“It is not yet clear why 2/4, Asesi Lane, Sasi Lane (SASI Palace), Adeniji Adele Road went down. Four persons have been rescued from the rubble. They have been taken to hospital.”

According to him, multiple emergency and response agencies were deployed to the scene, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Nigeria Police.

Omotoso said rescue operations are ongoing, with officials working to determine if more occupants are still trapped under the debris.

Recurring Trend of Building Collapses in Lagos

The latest incident marks another addition to the alarming trend of structural failures in the state.

1. On May 27, a building under construction collapsed in Ikorodu, killing one person.

2. On May 18, another structure under construction collapsed at Ishaga Road, opposite Idi Araba Central Mosque in Mushin.

3. In April, a three-storey building caved in at Ojodu-Berger, leading to seven deaths and 13 rescues.

4. In March, a building collapsed in Odoriwu Estate, Lekki, killing two persons.

Lagos residents and urban safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of building codes to stem the tide of collapses.
