The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has condemned the recent killing of Igbo youths of Ebonyi origin in Anambra State, describing the attack as a “cowardly and despicable act” aimed at deepening divisions within the Igbo nation.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB mourned the victims and called for unity among Igbos, warning that the killings were not isolated incidents but part of a broader plan to fracture the identity and solidarity of the Igbo people.
“Those killed were not just ‘Ebonyi indigenes’ in Anambra. They were Igbo sons murdered on Igbo soil. We reject every attempt to fragment or provincialize Igbo identity,” Powerful said.
The group alleged that the perpetrators were members of unauthorized vigilante groups formed by state governors without proper community input or training. IPOB claimed that initial findings point to these groups as responsible for what it described as a “massacre.”
“Rather than building a united security framework, the South East Governors have empowered violent, untrained vigilante groups that are now turning their weapons against the same people they were formed to protect,” IPOB stated.
The group further criticized the South East Governors Forum, accusing them of negligence, betrayal, and political cowardice.
“They have failed to defend our land and instead seek favour in Abuja, abandoning the people they swore to serve,” the group alleged.
Addressing public discourse on the incident, IPOB issued a warning to politicians, commentators, and individuals promoting what it called a “wicked narrative of tribal sub-categorisation.”
“You are strengthening those who wish to keep Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unjustly detained and Igboland perpetually insecure. Be warned: IPOB will hold you accountable before history and posterity,” the group warned.
The pro-Biafra movement called for an independent investigation into the killings and demanded that all those responsible be brought to justice.
Citing the example of Dr. Akanu Ibiam, an Igbo hero who famously returned his British knighthood during the Biafran War in protest, IPOB lamented that present-day leaders had betrayed such legacy.
“That heroic act was not for Ebonyi alone. It was for all Igbos. It is a shame that in the land of such legacy, governors now compete in betrayal while innocent sons of the soil are slaughtered,” the statement read.
In its concluding remarks, IPOB called for unity, restraint, and vigilance among Igbos across all regions, stressing that the blood of the victims would not be in vain.
“We are Ndigbo—not Anambra, not Ebonyi, not Imo, not Enugu, not Delta—we are one family. United we stand; divided, we fall. Let us never again give our enemies cause to celebrate.”
